For the first time in China, a mainstream men’s fashion magazine iLOOK featured the word “GAY” on its cover. With the help of renowned photographer Xu Chuang, Chinese Dutch fashion designer Xander Zhou honorably takes the throne in his black velvet gown. Over 100 pages of special featured stories of gay social elites from all walks of life made this issue of iLOOK shockingly impressive. iLOOK has been acclaimed for its progressive trendy taste in men. This time, it has gone to literally say the name of the audience they are targeting. Nevertheless, the word “GAY” in the title “GAY CHINA” has been translated to mean “happy” to avoid trouble from you-know-who. On behalf of Gayographic, I want to extend my gratitude to Hong Huang and Xander Zhou for their accomplishment.
Around this time last year, the Olympic athletes were packing their bags, counting their medals, and getting drunk one last time at the Holland Heineken House. As the Olympic hangover finally set in, we were in the headlong rush to wintertime. Unfortunately, we don’t have an Olympic sized event to ride the adrenal rush all the way to wool jacket season. Instead, it seems, this summer is going out with a more of a whimper than a bang. In the US, we have the Labor Day holiday as the unofficial end of summer, but here in China, it is the appearance of the humble mooncake on store shelves that immediately hits home that the days of lounging around in speedos
This Friday will be the fourth installment of our hugely popular Gayographic LAN Club parties. Despite the imminent departure of summer, the weather is still hot and sticky (not in a good way), so we’ve told LAN to crank up the aircon, so that means you boys will have to dance and move extra hard to add some heat to this party. The same deal as usual is on offer: half priced drinks and a lucky-draw for a variety of pink prizes. So bid August a fond farewell by drinking a mojito one last time before the cooler weather, and the resulting slower metabolism, cause the four-cups of sugar in that mojito to make your love handles just a little bit more lovable.
In ancient China, red paper lanterns, which were thought to be sensual, were placed outside brothels to identify them as such. These hanging red lanterns bathed the streets around brothels in red, thus giving us the term red-light district. Since most of our parties could be considered borderline prostitution anyway, we have decided to run with this concept and throw a red-light district party at Lantung this Thursday complete with red lanterns and dirty sluts, the latter being a regular weekly concept. The waiters will even be getting in on the slutty fun by dressing in their sexiest or skimpiest outfits. Lantung will be serving a special drink called
With Mother Nature seemingly at odds with the homo community by scheduling monsoons whenever we have outdoor soirees, we have decided to take the play-it-safe policy and hold more events in the climate controlled indoors. As many of you know, we have been holding successful parties at LAN Club. LAN, which couldn’t be more indoors with its total lack of windows (the apocalypse of fire and brimstone could cometh and you would be none the wiser while sipping your cosmo), will once again be the location for our next weekend event. Instead of trying to fix
Popo Fan, our Beijing gay film master, who was recently featured in Timeout Beijing, just returned from the World Out Games in Copenhagen, Denmark. He is extremely grateful for all those who contributed their time and effort to send him to compete at the Games on behalf of China. Gayographic caught up with Popo to find out about his experience in Copenhagen:
Gayographic continues Beijing’s long tradition of the Thursday night gay happy hour. Currently at Lantung Thai Bar & Bistro, this is the event to see and be scene. Very popular with the international gay community. Rooftop patio weather permitting. Half priced drinks until midnight. For special events, occasionally check our most recent promotional post.
In this crazy city, it seems that even the Italians want a piece of the pink pie. The new Italian supermarket/restaurant/bar mega complex, Piazza Italia, at Dawang Lu, just to the north of Shinkuang Place, is gearing up for a regular homo night in the near future. If Italian cuisine gives you gastronomic orgasms, then this place will certainly get you off faster than you can say “gnocchi”. Upon entering the sprawling building, you are greeted with a rather large Italian supermarket that seems to sell everything Italian short of Sophia Loren. The second floor, which is the restaurant, is where the real fun begins. If you are a fan of pasta, you will certainly not be disappointed. Unfortunately, fresh back from a fat inducing trip to New York
Without at doubt, Gayographic night at Lantung has been an astounding success, and we have you to thank for it. Come rain or shine (mostly rain) you have turned up to Lantung to “get your pink on” and to celebrate the imminent arrival of the weekend. You bore with us through the initial hiccups and bore with us when the weather has been less than cooperative. To give thanks for all your support of Gayographic night, Lantung will be throwing a FREE THAI BARBECUE for all early birds between 9:30pm to 10:30pm. So don’t miss some free and fabulous food before kicking off your Thursday night journey to Friday morning hangover. Just don’t forget to pray to the rain gods so that they may spare the usual deluge for a few hours.
