Waxing of the Summer and the Rise of the Mooncake

gayographic200908306Around this time last year, the Olympic athletes were packing their bags, counting their medals, and getting drunk one last time at the Holland Heineken House. As the Olympic hangover finally set in, we were in the headlong rush to wintertime. Unfortunately, we don’t have an Olympic sized event to ride the adrenal rush all the way to wool jacket season. Instead, it seems, this summer is going out with a more of a whimper than a bang. In the US, we have the Labor Day holiday as the unofficial end of summer, but here in China, it is the appearance of the humble mooncake on store shelves that immediately hits home that the days of lounging around in speedos (which most of you really shouldn’t, seriously) on an artificial beach in a Chinese park are numbered. But let’s not all rush out to by our Gucci long-underwear and prepare for the three-month long cold Siberian blow-job that generally chills our bones starting in November. In fact, for those of you who are new to Beijing, the next couple months possess some of the best weather this city has to offer. Instead of being like a gay sauna (steamy with the ever present scent of man gunk), the weather is cool and clear. So, even though the mooncakes have arrived and the end of summer is nigh, do not fret and enjoy the cool weather that is still ahead. We have a feeling that the rooftop at Lantung and the outdoor decks of the Boat will see even more cruising now that the threat level of embarrassing pit stains is about to go from orange to green.
